James Cook Museum, Cooktown, QLD

The James Cook Museum, a National Trust of Queensland property, is located in the Former Sisters of Mercy Convent, constructed in 1889. Nicola project managed and curated the $2.3 million Centenary of Federation project to re-develop the James Cook Museum and it collection, comprising more than 6,000 objects including social history objects, a significant collection of indigenous objects and stories, and the cannon and anchor from Captain James Cook╩╝s HMS Bark Endeavour.

The project included the coordination of an extension to the 1890s Sisters of Mercy Convent building by architect Rex Addison; collection assessment, recording, conservation management, and curatorial/exhibition development and design. The project also included the sensitive re-telling of the story of first contact between the Guugu Yimithir people, Captain Cook and the crew of HMS Bark Endeavour, and the stories of Hopevale Aboriginal Mission.
